Our History

it all began with a lottery

In 1821, Captain Laughlin McIntosh and his family won this property in the land lottery, according to the Sautee Nacoochee Center. The property changed hands several times, eventually being purchased by E.P. Williams who built his home here. He called it “Oak Hill” and lived here until late in the 1800s.

The next owners, the Green family, built and operated a hotel here, selling to the Alley family in 1896 when the hotel became known as the Alley Hotel. Sadly, a fire destroyed the hotel within a year of the Alley family’s purchase, but they rebuilt right away on the same foundation.

carriage rides from the train depot

The rebuilt Alley Hotel welcomed guests from 1897 until the early 1900s. Guests traveled by rail to this area, and were often brought from the closest train depot — the Demorest station — to the hotel in fancy surreys. These horse-drawn carriages were often adorned with red, gold and black fringe.

Large stones in our front yard served as seating for guests awaiting their carriage ride back to the train depot. Parts of those stones can still be seen today.

hotel, home, restaurant, bed and breakfast

After the Alley family moved, the property changed ownership several times with one owner changing the shape of the main structure. In 1957, the Alley family repurchased it to use as their own home until 1972 when John and Emily Anthony purchased it and opened a restaurant called the Sautee Inn. The restaurant served customers until 1992.

In 2004, the  Inn was purchase by Alberta and Tony who opened a bed and breakfast. In 2022, the current owners — Ron Geraneo, Rebecca Hollis and Mike Hollis — purchased, refurbished and reopened The Sautee Inn bed and breakfast.

We look forward to welcoming you to this historic inn!
